On the Road to Vegas

Topaz Lake NV to Las Vegas NV

Miles traveled 420

Tunes on the road by Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash

Miles and miles of sagebrush. Broad valleys and distant mountains, a harsh landscape. It has a certain charm, if you possess a vivid imagination or, perhaps, lack an imagination.

The yellow diamond caution signs (did I mention the one with a bear near Donner Lake?) now warn drivers to watch for:

•steer

•deer

•bighorn sheep

•horses

•steer that seems to be doing the polka (“open range”…I guess he’s happy to be free), and

•burros (the only ones I saw, and there were several, were in the town of Indian Springs, along the highway, possibly looking for handouts from passers-by).

The drive through Las Vegas, on the freeway, during the evening rush-hour was fun. At 70 mph (the speed limit) I’m sure I was quite annoying to my fellow drivers.

I will spare you the photos of the Circus Circus RV Park. Just picture your local grocery store parking lot, except with bigger spaces and without the lush landscaping. I have been remembering, longingly, the Oregon coast.

Next: There is only one Las Vegas (and that is probably a good thing).
